During September, SID has been positioned near the bottom of Church Street at the junction with Hallows Close. This is in a 20 mph speed limit area. It monitored the speed of vehicles as they approached the junction with Flat Lane.
About 300 vehicles a day passed this point. 88% of them were exceeding the speed limit and 50% of them were exceeding 24 mph, the speed at which they would face prosecution. 10% were exceeding 30 mph with the maximum speed recorded at 53 mph at 4 o'clock in the afternoon,, with several doing more than 40.
The worst times of day were between 8 and 9 in the morning and 3 and 4 in the afternoon which is clearly the school run.
Speed limits are set for the safety of all road users – pedestrians and drivers. So here we have drivers ignoring the speed limit probably with a child in the car and with children walking to school.
